Case Study

Education - Theodor-Heuss-Realschule (Germany)

When a school in Loerrach, Germany underwent renovation works following damage sustained during an earthquake, the specifiers turned to fragment retention lamp specialists GlassGuard® to satisfy not only their lighting requirements, but also the answer to reducing the risk of injury to staff and students from broken glass.

The renovation of Theodor-Heuss-Realschule incorporated state of the art design throughout and when it came to the upgrades, the latest European Standards were incorporated into the design to ensure complete safety throughout the whole building. These included energy efficiency, earthquake protection as well as IEC 61549 Fragment Retention Lamp standards.

Designed by Osman Askari of Askari Architektenbüro, the total cost of the overhaul came to 8 million Euros.

With the school being located in an area with a high earthquake risk, all aspects of safety were considered at the design phase, including the potential risk of personal injury from glass caused by broken lamps.

As a solution, GlassGuard® fragment retention lamps was specified and fitted throughout the whole school: from the entrance to the corridors, the offices, the classrooms, the sports hall, the changing rooms, the toilet facilities and the refectory.

GlassGuard® fragment retention lamps have an external plastic coating applied to them so in the event of accidental breakage, the coating will keep all the glass particles contained. GlassGuard® fragment retention lamps eliminate the risk of glass contamination and personal injury.

Approximately 500 GlassGuard® fragment retention lamps were installed. These include T5 and T8 fluorescents as well as Incandescents. GlassGuard®’s extensive range of products includes the highly acclaimed GlassGuard BlackBand® fluorescent tube.

"It makes sense to install GlassGuard® fragment retention lamps in a school environment where the safety of children is paramount.

I cannot say enough how pleased I am with the improved lighting and the peace of mind that I have with regards to the safety of the children."
